The Magic of Misting : Your Face Will Love You

August 21, 2022

Nature gives you the face you have at twenty; it is up to you to merit the face you have at 50+…Coco Chanel

Hello, my name is Kate Granado and I’m addicted to skincare!

The benefit of this particular addiction is that you are open to searching and trying new products. And every once in a while, you happen upon a product that becomes part of your forever routine. For me, one of those forever products is Rose Water Mist. Not all rose-scented products are created equal. Finding one that refreshed, left a lovely finish, and had an excellent fragrance took a while to find.

Today there is an abundance of mists to choose from. I originally started with an Evian mist, which – way back when – was all that was available. I spent many hours on international flights, and my skin felt like a prune when I landed. The mist was an excellent source of eliminating the dryness at 38,000 feet!

My favorite mist for the last few years is; Trader Joe’s Rose Water. But unfortunately, where I am currently living, the closest TJ’s is about 2,000 miles away. Even though there are so many more to choose from, finding a replacement has not been easy.

This is all you need for a clean face.

Around the time I began misting, I was also introduced to Micellar cleansing water, which improved and edited my evening skincare routine. My routine for years consisted of eye make-up remover, followed by a sudsy cleanser. I would lather up, wash my face and splash clean with running water. You know the routine…splish/splash. It was like taking a bath in the washbasin every night.

Then, our darling daughter, Christine, introduced me to Caudalie micellar cleansing water, and that was that! All you need is micellar water and a cotton round to remove all your make-up. You have cleansed, toned, and added moisture in minutes, without fuss, depending on the brand. Allure Magazine did a very informative article on how Micellar water works and why it cleans so well. Click on the highlight, and it will take you to the Allure article.

When I was 25, a best friend took me to Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills. I needed a skincare routine. I had never spent so much money at one time! I walked out loaded with Erno Laszlo products and a complete tutorial. In retrospect, it was one of the best investments. It taught me the benefits of a skincare routine. As we age, no matter where we are in years, it can be from 25 to 80; it is paramount that we continue to care for our skin. We all want to look in the mirror and feel confident that we look our best with well-cared for, healthy skin!

The Mist Evolution

The mist trend began a few years ago to help with hydration. Evian was one of the first to promote use throughout the day. The movement exploded as the mist evolved with added benefits and a more comprehensive range of brands to select from.

Jillian Wright is an acclaimed aesthetician and authority in skin care for over the last 15 years. and co-founder of the Indie Beauty Media Group, headquartered in New York City. IBMG was founded to support beauty/skincare entrepreneurs. Jillian is not surprised by the influx of mist. “Once clients begin a daily misting routine, the results are incredible and noticeable. As we advance with skincare innovations, misting will become a foundational addition to your skincare maintenance.”

The luxe beauty brand La Mer offers the Mist ($85), which uses marine botanical extracts to hydrate skin; Pause Well-Aging Hot Flash Cooling Mist ($39) relies on plant extracts and a form of menthol to cool skin. The French beauty brand Payot formulates its’ MY Payot Baume Éclat with hyaluronic acid and an antipollution compound to boost plumpness and protect the skin.

Can a spray mist deliver results?

Dr. Marina Peredo, a dermatologist in New York, says, “they definitely can, depending on the formulation.”

Dr. Peredo is a fan of mists containing hyaluronic acid, a molecule that helps the skin retain moisture; vitamin E, an antioxidant that enhances the skin’s barrier function; or glutathione, a tripeptide that may combat inflammation and is the star ingredient in the  PrimaSkinmist. Dr. Peredo uses it on patients in her Upper East Side office. “Initially, I used it because it was very cooling after laser treatments, but then I noticed over time it also brightened the skin,” says Dr. Peredo.

Mists have been around for decades. In France, women have long used mineral water sprays made from Evian and Vichy mineral water as part of their skincare regimen. Makeup artists have also used these water mists after applying heavy makeup for photo shoots or stage performances as a way “to make powder disappear and give back the texture of the skin,” said Matin Maulawizada, a celebrity makeup artist.

Camila Coelho, beauty and fashion entrepreneur and influencer with 8.8 million followers on Instagram, said she was adamant about including a mist in Elaluz, the line of beauty products she introduced this past summer. “I use it in the morning to tone my skin — it helps to tighten the pores before I apply my skincare, and then I use it on top of makeup,” Ms. Coelho said of her All Day Beauty Water ($49), which is enriched with guarana and papaya extracts.

Beyond their mind-refreshing capabilities, face mists are a very versatile skin-care product. “Facial mists are not just overpriced water to spray on your skin,” explains Dr. Stacy Chimento, a dermatologist at Riverchase Dermatology in Miami. “Many facial mists contain hydrating ingredients such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid.”  “You know when you put makeup on, and you look kind of dry? It’s the perfect refresh.”

Mist or No Mist – It’s up to you

We all know about the importance of hydrating our bodies, and now we are learning the importance of hydrating our skin regularly, daily. In researching this article, I was impressed with the enthusiasm of the medical community and professional estheticians in misting. I know that I could not fly without it. If you do pack a mist in your tote, be sure it is TSA size approved. I was on the phone with a friend this morning, she asked what I was writing about, and I told her misting…”Yikes, one more product that I have to buy – when does it end?” I think the answer is “It doesn’t.” The upside of misting is, you can mist once to set your make-up and that’s it for the day. Or, you can toss it in your purse and mist, throughout the day whenever you feel the need. I have to admit…I am a misting fan.

“Auntie Kate” – what a great article! In my 65 years I have never misted my face, ever…. but I am headed to Denver next week and when I get there my first stop will be Trader Joe’s to grab a bottle of their Rosewater Mist. My face needs all the help I can give it – hahaha!! Like you, we have no Trader Joe’s in Midland, Texas.
Love reading all your stuff and hope I see you again soon.

Hey Kate. I forgot all about misting my face decades ago with Evian spray. I’m adding it to my list of must haves to combat the heat and humidity here in Italy. It’ll be interesting to see how many different products I’ll be able to find in the beauty stores here. Thanks for the hot tip, girlfriend! xoxo
